Ongoing Activities & Workshops
At Kids Developmental Therapy, we strive to provide the best possible care to our patients who receive speech, occupational, and physical therapy.
Kids Developmental Therapy believes that the best way to achieve a child’s therapy goals is by combining efforts through strong parental support, skilled and caring therapy techniques, and by having lots of fun! Please take a look at some of the activities and programs we have that emphasize family, therapy and fun!
We work with the children and their families to make therapy fun as well as motivate maximum participation. Some examples of the programs we offer in conjunction with our associated Outpatient Clinics are Parenting Classes, ballet classes and social summer camps!
Constructing a Varied Diet
KDT patients can benefit from the KDC clinics’ eight-week feeding program. It targets picky eaters and addresses oral motor and sensory issues that cause fear and rejection of non-routine feeding experiences. The program involves Speech-Language Pathologists and Occupational Therapists leading a multi-sensory peer group and providing parent education.
Houston Ballet Class
The Houston Ballet completed a five-week class at KDC clinics for KDT patients, which is free. The class, part of the Houston Ballet Community Outreach Program, is called “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” movement class. It teaches patients about body movement and spatial awareness, as well as words describing movement.
Parent Workshops
The next parent workshops will be in August regarding Contents of the IEP. This workshop is designed to provide parents with practical working knowledge of the contents of the IEP as defined by IDEA. Through the process of writing an IEP, we will learn to set reasonable and measurable learning goals for a child with a disability, and to state the individualized services that the scho9ol district will provide for that child. Each workshop will be hosted from 10-11 a.m. at one of our clinics:
- Tuesday, August 6 at our Southwest Clinic
- Wednesday, August 7 at our West Clinic
- Thursday, August 8 at our North Clinic
- Thursday, August 15 at our Pasadena Clinic
To register for these courses, simply call any one of our clinics or talk to your therapist to let them know you are interested in attending.
Summer Camp Opportunities
Our Clinics often offer varying day camp opportunities for our patients and their families to enjoy. Look out for all kinds of options for summer camps available at your clinic or ask your therapist about this year’s opportunities.
Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT)
Kids Developmental Therapy recognizes the therapeutic benefits of animal-assisted therapy (AAT) for children. We partner with trained animals and their handlers to support children in achieving their speech, occupational, and physical therapy goals. Our affiliation with top animal-assisted therapy programs in the Greater Houston Area allows children to enhance various skills, such as strength, coordination, language, daily activities, and social interactions. The animals also provide a calming effect and reduce stress. Moreover, an AAT dog adds an element of fun while children work on challenging therapy skills.
Orthotics/Wheelchair Clinic
As a convenience to our patients and to allow better continuity of care with other health care providers, KDT in conjunction with Kids Developmental Clinic provide a regularly scheduled orthotics and wheelchair clinic at the KDC clinics. To ensure the most appropriate, best-fitting equipment, equipment supplier representatives and orthotists come to KDC to consult with the patient, family, and therapist.
Bi-Annual Kids Carnival
Our bi-annual carnival is the biggest and most exciting event of the year, as KDC and KDT employees join together to provide food, fun and laughter for our patients and their families. In addition, information about community resources and services are made available to the families. The Kids Carnival occurs on the last Saturday every other September. Featured entertainment includes shows vary year to year. Children love the moonwalks, petting zoo and rock wall, and the music and game booths keep the them smiling.
